Bireli Lagrene - My favorite Django (1995)

It is an incredibly well played collection of Django reinterpretations with honesty and respect by Bireli. The fact that electronic arrangements are involved doesn't mean that this cd is bad or that it should be forgotten. Bireli's playing here is exceptional as it has always been .. consider that he plays here songs that he knows really well so he really plays with ease and comfort .... Solos are magnificient and the electric, "Weather Report" type of feel is a great idea, a great contribution to Django's music which surely it is eternal but it needs a little of modern taste ... at least sometimes and expecially if the treatment is done as well as it is done here by the very talented and inspired Bireli..
I really love this cd and I think it is almost perfect..

Alex Skolnick Trio – Last Day In Paradise (2007)

n March 15, 2007, Alex Skolnick Trio will unleash "Last Day In Paradise" on Magnatude Records. It consists of seven original compositions along with three arrangements of hard rock 'standards,' (a concept upon which the trio has built a strong reputation as an instrumental group that appeals to straight-ahead jazz fans and rock fans alike). Feeling the inspiration of European jazz and other influences, the group has now gone beyond the limitations of the traditional guitar trio format on many of the songs, incorporating electronic loops ('Last Day In Paradise'), vocal melodies ('Mercury Retrograde') and slide guitar ('Western Sabbath Stomp'). There are also special effects, bowed bass tracks and other studio embellishments, resulting in their most original and cutting edge album to date. The new album also includes a Latin version of the Testament song `Practice What You Preach' (which Alex originally co-wrote) and a live electronica inspired version of Rush classic 'Tom Sawyer.'

Bill Evans & Jim Hall - Intermodulation (1966)

This album is one of the acknowledged classic jazz duo recordings by two of the music's great influences. Why it is now only available as an import is a mystery.

Recorded in 1966 -- four years later after their first duo album, "Undercurrent" -- this meeting of these two unique jazz minds is a pleasure. Evans now-classic composition "Turn Out the Stars" makes its first appearance on record here; another highlight is "Angel Face" -- wherein a solo fragment Evans played here was later was made into the main melodic motif of the pianist's "Sugar Plum" in 1971.

Bill especially liked "Jazz Samba" from this album, saying that "We could not have got the same result with a full rhythm section. It's hard to get that buoyant moving feeling..."

In playing jazz, guitar and piano have long had a somewhat difficult time working in empathy with each other -- especially in a duo format without the framework of bass and drums -- both instruments can muddy up the other's middle range. This album (as well as their previous session) should be "lesson #1" in how to do so effectively.
